Hollywood
Hollywood is a famous area within Los Angeles. It is situated west-northwest of downtown L.A. Due to its cultural identity and fame as the historical center of the movie industry and home to the stars, the word Hollywood is often used as a synonym for American cinema. Today, much of the movie industry has dispersed into neighboring areas such in West L.A., and the Santa Clarita Valleys and San Fernando. However, significant auxiliary industries, such as effects, editing, props, lighting companies, and post-production remain in Hollywood, as does the back-lot of Paramount Pictures. Hollywood’s border can be loosely described as the region east of West Hollywood, south of Laurel Canyon, Mulholland Drive, Barham Boulevard and Cahuenga Boulevard, and the cities of Burbank and Glendale, north of Melrose Avenue and west of Hyperion Avenue and the Golden State Freeway. This includes all of Los Feliz and Griffith Park – two areas that were before considered separate from Hollywood by most Angelenos. The population of the region, including Los Feliz, as of the 2010 census was 126,531 and the median household income was $41,230 in 2008. As a neighborhood within the L.A. city limits, Hollywood does not have its own municipal government. There was in the past an official, appointed by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, who served as the honorary Mayor of Hollywood for ceremonial purposes only. Johnny Grant held this position from 1980 until his death on 2008. However, no replacement has ever been named yet since Grant's death. Finally after years of terrible decline, while many Hollywood landmarks were threatened with demolition, the city is now undergoing rapid gentrification and revitalization with a goal of urban density in sight. Many new developments have been finished, typically centered around Hollywood Boulevard. The Hollywood and Highland complex, at site of the Kodak Theater, has been a major catalyst in the redevelopment of the area. In addition, numerous trendy clubs, retail businesses, and bars have opened on or surrounding the boulevard, returning Hollywood to a center for nightlife in Los Angeles. Many of the areas older buildings have been converted into lofts and condominiums. The ‘W’ Hollywood Hotel is now open at the intersection of Vine and Hollywood.
